Hardware.aero is pleased to announce that we have expanded our catalog by adding threaded inserts to the collection.

What is a Threaded Insert?

Threaded inserts are used to prevent stripping in a softer material or to repair material where the threading has been damaged.  The insert is literally inserted into the hole to provide threading for a screw or stud to utilize.  They are a relatively inexpensive solution to protect your machined metal parts.

These are the primary types of threaded inserts we will discuss:

  • Helical wire -- literally wire that is coil-formed to the designated thread size.  This comes either tanged or tangless.
  • Keylocking Threaded Inserts -- this type features a solid, one-piece construction utilizing "keys" which are tapped into place to lock position

Who are the common manufacturers of Threaded Inserts for aerospace?

  • Arconic Fastening Systems (aka Alcoa aka Fairchild aka Keensert aka Recoil)
  • Acme Industrial
  • Heli-Coil (aka Stanley Engineered Fastening aka previously Emhart)
  • Kato Fastening Systems
  • Helical Wire

What types of material do they come in?

  • Stainless (303, 304, 316 17-4 PH, A286)
  • Nitronic 60 (another type of austenitic stainless)

  • Iconel 718
  • Carbon Steel

Common Finishes Include: Zinc Phosphate, Passivation, Cadmium, Dry-Film Lube, Silver, & Nickel.
